Disk encryption

Drive encryption and data encryption in general are crucial elements in ensuring data processing security. Regardless of what data is stored on the device (confidential work documents or private photographs), we generally do not want unauthorised individuals to have access to it. In the event of a storage medium being stolen, it is encryption that protects us from the leakage of the information it contains.

When deciding to encrypt data, we have two possible approaches to this issue:

  • Encrypting the entire data storage device (the entire flash drive, the whole hard drive in a laptop, etc.).
  • Encrypting only specific files. The storage device itself remains unencrypted (encrypting a specific file, encrypting an archive, an encrypted container).

HP DriveLock (HP) 
An HP solution for securing drive access on HP devices. This solution is not recommended due to a lack of available information regarding the software and its potential vulnerabilities. The manufacturer does not refer to it as encryption, but merely as a security measure similar to encryption. It should not be used.

Dell Data Protection | Encryption – DDPE (Dell) 
A paid suite of Dell solutions providing comprehensive data protection on devices, external media, and cloud storage, along with centralised management for organisation administrators.

SecureDoc (Lenovo) 
Paid software by WinMagic, featuring specific support for Lenovo devices. It offers various types of data encryption and its centralised management, which is useful for infrastructure administrators.

SED (self-encrypting drive) 
HDDs and SSDs that do not require additional encryption software, as they perform this process automatically.
